Executive Summary
The Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS) Islamabad organized a webinar on ‘Rise of Minilateralism and the Future of Multilateralism in Asia Pacific’ on 15 November 2023. The discussion brought forth the concept of minilateralism, a pivotal shift from broad, multilateral agreements to more targeted collaborations among fewer states. As minilateralism gains momentum, it raises crucial questions about the future balance and effectiveness of multilateralism in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the Asia Pacific.
Ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi, the Executive Director CISS, delivered his thoughtful welcome remarks. The speakers’ panel included national and international experts. Dr Fouzia Amin, Assistant Professor at National Defence University Islamabad, delivered a presentation on ‘Great Power Rivalry in Asia Pacific: Implications for South Asia.’ Dr Vuslat Nur Sahin, an international affairs expert and a PhD from Waseda University, Japan, spoke about ‘New Patterns of Strategic Alignment in Asia Pacific.’ Mahrukh Khan, Research Fellow at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, explored the ‘Emergence of Regional Alliances: the Future of Asia Pacific.’ Dr Muhammadi, Associate Director Research, CISS Islamabad, presented his analysis on ‘Strategic Stability in Asia Pacific: Way Forward.’ Dr Atia Ali Kazmi, Director Research CISS Islamabad, delivered concluding remarks that brought the seminar to a close. The participants’ insights proved to be of immense value.
