On 11 September 2024, Ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi, Executive Director of CISS, was interviewed by Voice of America (VOA) Urdu on the topic “Ups and Downs in Pak-US Relations after 9/11.” Joining him in the discussion were Syed Mushahid Hussain, a former senator, and Syed Muhammad Ali, an independent analyst. Ambassador Naqvi reflected on the trajectory of Pak-US relations post-9/11, noting that bilateral ties strengthened significantly due to a convergence of interests between the two states. Before 9/11, Pakistan faced international isolation, and General Pervez Musharraf’s government was largely unrecognized on the global stage. However, after the attacks, Pakistan became a key player in the international arena, owing to its active role in the War on Terror. Today, however, there is a clear divergence in the strategic interests of both countries, and the likelihood of a renewed alignment is slim. Ambassador Naqvi also pointed out that it is no longer in Pakistan’s interest to seek a revival of those past convergences.
