The Center for International Strategic Studies Islamabad recently held a five-day workshop on strategic matters, featuring delegations from Karakoram International University Gilgit and University of Baltistan, Skardu. The discussions explored the evolving global and regional security environments, the significance of nuclear deterrence, and strategic stability in South Asia, with particular emphasis on the impacts of global power competition, notably the Sino-US rivalry in the Asia-Pacific region. The presentations shed light on the challenges to strategic stability posed by India’s military developments and its refusal to engage in peace initiatives, alongside Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful South Asia and its reliance on nuclear deterrence as a defense strategy. Additionally, the workshop addressed the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes in Pakistan, the socio-economic benefits derived from it, and the geostrategic significance of Gilgit-Baltistan. It also explored the concept of Hybrid Warfare, especially in the context of Gilgit-Baltistan, highlighting the threats posed by such strategies and the need for effective mitigation. Additionally, the workshop featured visits to notable institutions and strategic sites including PINSTECH, PIEAS, SUPARCO, and the 10 Corps, enriching the participants’ understanding with practical insights. An interactive session with the Corps Commander 10 Corp and a significant discussion with the President of Pakistan at the President’s House were also part of the agenda, offering an unparalleled opportunity for direct engagement on national security and strategic issues. This comprehensive workshop served as a platform for sharing perspectives and fostering a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics shaping South Asia’s strategic landscape.
